This breed dates back to the start of the 1800s in Powys, Wales, but it took nearly 90 years for a breed society to be formed! The breed got its name from the local village near Newtown - Kerry. The breed has very distinctive markings to its face and legs. Breed standards dictate that they should have a black muzzle and two black eye patches with the remainder of the face white with 2 black ears. They have black and white legs which are free from wool.
Their fleeces are short and dense, given the hills they are used to. They have a white/cream coloured fleece but their fleeces can occasionally throw some dark fibres known as kemp as the sheep ages. We find the fleeces to be soft but very hard wearing. So it is useful for most purposes with crafting and in particular Welsh heritage craft.
