The Llandovery is a Welsh mountain sheep but is on the larger size compared to other similar hill breeds. The males can be horned, but in most cases tend to not have horns at all. This breed has been roaming the Black Mountain of Carmarthenshire since the early 1900s. They have increased in popularity over the years to produce Welsh mules and Welsh halfbreds.
They have a white fleece which covers their body. Their face and legs are clear from wool but are also white in colour. Their fleeces are often very dense from life on the hills as this provides them with warmth and protection from the elements.
There is very little information available about this breed, it feels very much like a forgotten breed so we are determined to shine some light on these lesser known breeds! We find the wool to be a medium-soft wool which is brilliant for general purpose. We would say it is soft enough to spin, but haven’t had a chance to test its wearability at this stage! This is a fantastic choice for those wanting to support our Welsh farmers!
Average Fleece Weight: 2.5 - 4 KG
Average Staple Length: 2.5 - 5 Inches
Micron Range: Unknown - We estimate 30-35
Recommended Craft areas - product trials ongoing but definitely Welsh and native themed crafts
