Unique features: The Llanwenog is our favourite Welsh breed because it is just so versatile and on the softer side to feel which probably comes from it’s Shropshire breeding. It’s definitely a more spinnable fleece and it also takes to the other crafting areas very well. It’s a nice lustrous white colour and we just need to repeat wet felting product trials again to confirm how it behaves.
This breed was first developed in Western Wales at the start of the 19th century. It was the product of crossing a Shropshire with a local black-faced breed, which is now extinct. They have a jet black face which stands out against the white fleece which covers the brow of the skull.
The fleece is fairly short in staple length, which makes it quite dense. The breed is able to survive on both upper and lower land for grazing. This breed is on the ‘at risk’ of extinction list due to numbers steadily declining through the years. So in buying this wool you are supporting the breeds comeback and the Welsh farmers! The fleeces are great all round and perfect for Welsh themed craft areas
