Unique features: This is a coarse, spiky wool with white and grey fibres running through. The staple is fairly long and it is one of the best fleeces to do needle felting and sculptures with.
This breed was developed recently by farmers on the border of North Yorkshire and Westmorland. They are a very hardy ‘mountain’ sheep. They have been bred to survive on the exposed hillsides which can be exposed to strong wind and rain. They are a popular choice of breeding ewe which are used to produce the North of England mule gimmer lambs for breeding. They have a dark face with a white/grey muzzle and they also have curled horns which spiral round their ears.
They have a very coarse fleece which is important for their survival on the hills. It is mainly white, but some black can appear through the fleece too. They tend to have a long tail which is also covered in wool but usually isn’t kept after shearing time. We find it is a multipurpose fleece, but mainly for crafting.
