Unique features: This fleece is ultra soft and one of the best curly slender wools for spinning. The colour and the curls though make Gotland so unique for other craft areas especially with needle felting.
This breed of sheep first originated in Sweden, on the island of Gotland. The Vikings were responsible for the breed after brining other breeds home from Russia and crossing them back to a Swedish breed. The Vikings would often wear the Gotland skins as clothing. On the Isle of Gotland, there is still a strong bloodline of horned Gotland's grazing there.
The modern Gotland that we now know in Britain was developed through the 1920s. They chose to focus on a long wooled sheep, silky locks and with good meat too. These are formally know as Gotland Peltsheep. They first hit the Scottish shores before becoming popular through out the rest of the UK. The breed is a very milky sheep, very active and inquisitive.
The fleece is a lovely blend of black, greys and whites with wonderful curls. It is often a very dense fleece which is very soft to the touch. Perfect for spinning and felting for added colour and texture to pieces. Gotland is one of our most popular fleeces which we are constantly having to restock!
