This breed was developed in the 19th century in the Netherlands. They have been bred to focus on the milkiness of the ewe, they are considered a dairy sheep. The name comes from a Dutch term meaning ‘black with a white blaze’. They are easy to tame sheep who are partial to being hand fed! They have a tall and long body which is completely black. Their characteristic features are a white stripe on their face, 2 white socks and a white tip to their tail. They are becoming increasingly popular with small holders and larger farms wanting to produce black female lambs by crossing zwartbles with texels.

Zwartbles is a brown/black spongy all purpose fleece with a medium staple. Perfect for rug making, needle felting, weaving and spinning for crafters of all levels. It makes a great core wool and suits flocking requirements too.
