As the name suggests, this breed of sheep originates from the Isle of Soay, in Scotland! This is a small island to the west of Loch Scavaig and is only 2560 acres! It is sparsely inhabited. The Soay sheep is the most primitive sheep known to Europe. There are records back to prehistoric times which match the description of this breed!
They are small in stature but are extremely resilient and hard. They have a naturally coloured chocolate/ tan coloured fleece which covers their body. Their face is wool free, but have got distinctive white markings to the face. They have 2 horns which curl around their ears, which gains a ring each year of life. The fleece is best used for crafts, such as heritage spinning and needle felting. The fleece is soft and silky to the touch often... but not always
