Originating from the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland is the type of Cheviot that we stock although there are two other Cheviot types namely North Country Cheviot and Brecknock Cheviot. The Northumberland Cheviot that we stock here is often referred to as South Country Cheviot or Original Cheviot which originated in the Cheviot Hills on the border between Northumberland and Scotland.
The Cheviot are an active sheep who are very alert and can survive well on hill lands. They are generally all white and have a white face. The hill type rams can have horns which curl around their ears and they also have a tuft of coarse hair to the back of their neck.
The Cheviot breed is one of our all round favourites. It is a large, meaty sheep that performs well in all areas. You very rarely get a sick or lame Cheviot and they are very strong and fit to handle. They are very fertile usually and milky mothers with good growth rates on lambs.
Their fleeces are excellent and definitely one of our most recommended fleece breeds. The staple is fairly long, wavy, strong and so soft. It is a medium bodied wool that you can wear on your skin but also do every over craft section. It’s not recommended for wet felting as the fleeces tend to stay supple and loose regardless of conditions. The fleeces are huge so they are really great value.
