Unique features: A beautiful set of natural colouring is in the North Ronaldsay. It’s soft, coarse and slender all in one. A quirkly fleece full of character and colour ideal for sculpture work. Some locks around the leg areas are very long.
Similar timeline to the Manx, this breed can be dated back to the 9th century making it a very old and established breed. They have been bred and adapted to life on the Orkneys, particularly North Ronaldsay! They are a very small and slim sheep with an extremely short tail. They are excellent mothers and are able to milk them with little nutrients. The rams tend to have horns unlike the females which don’t always develop horns.
They have a coarse wool which usually has a huge range of colours. We have seen grey, white, black and brown. But even within the fleeces, the colour variants are fantastic. The fleeces are often double coated with a soft underlayer and longer locks on top. Perfect wool for hand spinning.
