W&D - Jacob

£20.00

This breed derives from a sheep from the Middle Easterns which was regularly talked about in the Christian Bible. It was introduced to the UK in the early 17th century due to its characteristic looks. They make fantastic mothers and are very milky. It is not uncommon for Jacobs to ‘adopt’ and raise lambs which aren’t their own. Jacobs can have 0,2 or 4 horns depending on the genes and this is for both sexes. Typically, 2 horned jacobs have 2 horns which come from the top of the skull. 4 horned have 2 which come from the top of the skull and 2 from either side of their head just above their ears.

Their fleece is a multitude of colours. They have dark brown spots which are against their creamy colour fleece. But once the fleece is shorn you are able to see the full range of colours. Our jacob fleeces are regularly sold for saddle flocking. The fleeces are also great for weaving and handspinning. A lot of our peg loom rugs include jacob wool to provide a range of natural colours. Makes for excellent needle felting core wool and fantastic coloured locks for needle felting. The fleeces in carded format will wet felt but with mixed results. The rug type fleeces will wet felt best with carded Mule but Jacob backing wool can be used it is just a bit more work to acheive.

Average Fleece Weight: 2-3 KG

Average Staple length: 3-6 inches.

Micron Range: 32-34
