Unique features: Mohair is a soft stranded hair like fibre rather than wool which adds such a variety to our collection. It’s shiny and silky. It also has wonderful shiny ringlets often. As a top coat in needle felting it lies very flat and produces shine and for spinning it’s got a very unique soft hair like texture very different from wool and other fibres like alpaca or llama so it truly stands out on its own.
Mohair is the type of fibre which comes from an Angora goat. The term mohair derived from the Arabic term for fabric. The angora goat looks very sheep-like to the point they are often mistaken for sheep! They have white-cream curls which cover their legs, body and most of their face. A small amount of black nose and black ears can be seen poking out from under the wool!
Mohair is an extremely soft fibre which is extremely silky to work with. As the goat ages, the micron count of the fibre also increases. So younger animals produce much softer fibres which are ideal for wearable knits and creations. The mohair also takes very well to dyes and it is able to be coloured to any colour you need for your craft or creation!
