We stock The North of England Mule! We have in the past tried other two Mule varieties and they all had the same or very similar results. The reason we condensed back to one was for reasons of cutting down admin and taking on too many variations of breeds.
The North of England Mule was developed on the Northern Fells and is a Bluefaced Leicester ram crossed with a swaledale ewe.
Scotch Mule - This is a relatively new type of breed, only being formally recognised in the last 40 years. They are a combination of a blackfaced ewe and a bluefaced leicester ram.
Welsh Mule - This is slightly older than the scotch mule. And it is a combination of the bluefaced leicester and a hill ewe - usually a welsh mountain.
These are one of the most popular breeding ewes in England due to their prolificacy and milkiness. They are easy to handle and work with and tend to live for up to 10 years. They have a mottled face and legs, with fleece just covering their body. It is a medium soft wool which is great for rugs. It is also good to dye and work with craft projects.
Average Fleece Weight: 2 - 4 KG
Average Staple Length: 4 - 8 Inches
Micron Range: 30 - 32.5
Recommended Craft Areas:- EVERYTHING! There isn’t anything a Mule can’t do in woolcraft. It is our number 1 absolutely favourite high performance breed. Just like the sheep itself! Amazing wool!! And hardly anyone knows the true power of the common Mule!
