Unique features: A downy wool with a good medium staple on it. Nice lock separation given how dense the wool is. A little coarse to be skin wearable but it is spongy and dense so the decisions should be made by the crafter as to it’s direction. We have used it for stuffing things with in its washed and dried form and it’s got a unique region of origin. It’s the only breed from Oxfordshire.
This breed of sheep was developed around the 1830s in Oxfordshire by cross breeding a Hampshire down/ South Down ewe with a Cotswold ram. It was predominantly bred to improve its meat conformity. They are large built sheep which are very powerful and robust. It also produces one of the heaviest fleeces of the ‘downs’.
Their fleece covers most of their body! They have fleece down their legs and also all over their faces, leaving just two eye holes poking through! They have a beautiful soft, spongy, downy fleece which makes this breed very easy to work with as a core wool and for spinning. Perfect for soft and spongy peg loom rugs too.
