Unique features: This is the most dense and short staple wool we have which is native. There is Berrichon which is similar but Southdown really owns the dense section of the chart. It’s like squeezing a sponge and it is very high in lanolin.
This breed of sheep has roamed the Sussex Downs for centuries and wasn’t massively altered until the 1800’s. They are a docile sheep, easy to handle and a medium sized build. They have very small ears compared to their heads. Their face, ears and legs have a mousey brown tint to them.
They have a relatively thick fleece which is dense yet fine. The wool covers their body, legs and most of their face. This is a shorter staple fleece but it is extremely bouncy and silky soft. It is one of the best fibres for clothing and also in craft projects too.
